Biometrics at Every Touchpoint, at Scale

At U.S. Customs and Border Protection, NEC’s cloud-based identification solutions power all back-end biometric matching for entry/exit passenger processing at land, sea, and airports across the country — the infrastructure behind every facial recognition touchpoint where CBP screening is enabled.

Delta Air Lines became the first U.S. carrier to offer a full curb-to-gate biometric experience at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The opt-in service drove 87% passenger adoption — with Delta since expanding biometric boarding to eight additional U.S. airports. Travelers pass check-in, bag drop, TSA verification, and boarding using their face as their only credential.

NEC’s TSA checkpoint pilot at LAX — and subsequently ATL — demonstrated that a frictionless curb-to-gate experience using face as a Digital ID was operationally viable at two of the nation’s busiest airports. The pilot integrated NEC’s matching capability directly into TSA checkpoint workflows without requiring changes to traveler behavior.

Star Alliance, the world’s largest airline alliance, adopted the NEC Digital Platform to bring biometric services to member airlines across check-in, bag drop, airport lounges, and boarding gates — allowing frequent flyers to enroll once and use their Digital ID across participating carriers.

Built for Security, Privacy, and Regulatory Compliance

NEC’s aviation and border biometric solutions are designed privacy-first — opt-in architecture ensures traveler consent drives every enrollment. CBP’s Traveler Verification Service (TVS) integration means NEC technology connects directly to authoritative government databases without creating a new data silo. REAL ID-ready credential authentication supports TSA document verification without requiring physical contact between travelers and officers.

Connected Solutions Across the Traveler Journey

Border security and aviation operations share the same core challenge: moving people efficiently without compromising identity, security, or situational awareness. Whether the environment is a port of entry, a terminal, or a checkpoint, NEC delivers the technology to process high volumes — with confidence at every step.

Smarter tracking and apron visibility for baggage handling and asset management.

NeoFace® Express Lite Next Generation is NEC’s contactless facial recognition software for high-traffic environments — airports, border crossings, and secure venues. It operates from 3 to 10 feet away, even in low light, without requiring travelers to stop or slow down. It powers automated passenger boarding, security screening, and access control — identifying passengers in under two seconds on average.

Smart ID Express™ is NEC’s purpose-built border identity solution — designed to identify individuals in motion, reduce congestion, and strengthen situational awareness across land, air, and maritime entry points. It enables border agencies to process high volumes without creating bottlenecks, and integrates with existing CBP and port-of-entry infrastructure to accelerate processing at scale.

NEC’s Credential Authentication Technology reads Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards and travel documents, captures face images, and uses ultraviolet light to verify document authenticity — all in a single, ergonomic hardware unit. It eliminates the need for physical contact between travelers and TSA officers, making it faster and more hygienic for high-volume checkpoint environments.

NEC Digital ID lets travelers enroll using a mobile device — a selfie and a scan of their passport or travel document — creating a secure, face-linked credential protected with blockchain technology. Once enrolled, passengers use their face at every touchpoint from curb to gate: check-in, bag drop, security, and boarding. Travelers remain in control of when and where their Digital ID is shared.
